Give to Campaign
United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County’s 2024 Annual Campaign is underway, with a goal of raising $1.5 million to help support 33 programs in 23 partner agencies in the Carlisle and Cumberland County footprint.
Thanks to the generosity of donors last year, thousands of your fellow community members received essential support during their time of need. The 2023 Campaign helped to provide 9,010 children with quality educational supports, provided 1,7404 individuals with basic needs such as food and shelter, and provided 5,283 individuals with access to health care services. And this is just a small example of the programs the United Way funds.
This year’s Campaign Co-Chairs are Dickinson College’s Beth Ann Jones and F&M Trust’s Laura Potthoff. They haveboth volunteered their time to Lead the Campaign to reach the $1.5 million goal.
United Way launched the campaign at a kickoff event Sept. 11 at Carlisle United Methodist Church on Spring Garden Street. F&M sponsored this important kickoff event.
During the event, United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County Executive Director Cate Mellen, Lead the Way and gave an update of the state of ALICE in Cumberland County. The most recent ALICE report from the United Way of PA highlights the increasing cost of living in Cumberland County and the wages necessary for survival. The number of individuals living below the ALICE threshold in Cumberland County is on the rise, with 37% of households—approximately 39,797—falling into this category. Among these, 8% are living below the federal poverty line, translating to about 8,839 households in poverty.
Representatives from two of United Way’s partner agencies, Scott Shewell from Safe Harbour and Jeanna Som from Supportive Program for Youth spoke about their work in the community and how important funding from the United Way is to continuing their programs. In addition, Dickinson’s Dottie Warner ran a trivia game highlighting the core areas that The United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County focuses on: Health, Education, Financial Security and ensuring community members have a safety net.
The success of each campaign is based on the help of many members of the community, whether it be local companies, small businesses, or individuals, who help by volunteering, advocating or donating.
