About Us

United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County

OUR MISSION

To unite people and resources to build a stronger, healthier Carlisle & Cumberland County.

We are a nonprofit serving the Carlisle and Cumberland County area. We address the most critical needs in our community by focusing on education, income, health and safety net. We invite you to join us by Living United and advancing the common good. Together, united, we can create a better future for all!

We provide funding to 23 partner agencies and 33 programs and run a very successful Success By 6 program, heating assistance program, and tax assistance program. We have a history of successfully partnering with local agencies on projects such as pandemic preparedness, transitioning teams when local companies are closing or significantly downsizing, agency fairs and financial management courses.

Established in 1918, United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County has had many familiar names, including the Red Feather, Community Chest, and United Fund. We have run campaigns every year since our founding. In 1970, when United Way became a cohesive national organization, we changed our name to United Way of the Greater Carlisle Area. In June 2001, United Way created a Community Services Center at 145 S. Hanover St., offering incubation services to small nonprofits. We also adopted a new name reflecting an increased presence in the region – United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

United Way believes that every person is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect – this includes equal treatment and access to justice. Recent events involving violence and threats against African Americans expose our society’s underlying racism, prejudice and privilege that prevent too many people from being treated with the humanity and respect they deserve. These incidents are abhorrent and run counter to everything that United Way, its volunteers and professionals value, live and fight for every day.

All people of all backgrounds and identities must call out discrimination and demand its removal from our society; otherwise, we are endorsing the status quo and are complicit in the abuses that follow.

We must all do our part, working United, to make our communities the places that we need them to be – equitable, respectful and opportunity-filled. We, as a society, can and must do better to guarantee that the basic human rights and freedoms of every person in every community are protected.
