Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read is a community partnership between Success By 6 and Sadler Health Center. This early literacy program ensures that all children have access to books prior to starting kindergarten. Doctors and nurse practitioners at Sadler Health Center write a “prescription for reading” as part of a child’s well visit. Each child takes home a book to read with their family.  At more than 10 routine health checkups from infancy through five years of age, trained Reach Out and Read medical professionals encourage families to read aloud together by:

  1. talking with parents about how important it is to read aloud and engage with their children;
  2. demonstrating how best to look at books and talk about the stories with infants, toddlers and preschoolers; and,
  3. encouraging parents to cuddle up and read together at home and build routines around books.

Through generous donations, Success By 6 provides more than 100 books each month to Sadler Health Center and the children they serve! To learn more about the national Reach Out and Read Program go to www.reachoutandread.org

Sadler Health Center is located at 100 N. Hanover St., Carlisle, PA 17013.

REAL Men Read MENtor Program

Success By 6 is pleased to announce that our REAL Men Read MENtor program has expanded to 10 early childhood centers: Bethel Preschool and Daycare,  Carlisle Early Education Center, Joyful Steps Preschool, Kidz for the Future Learning Academy, Little Lights Learning Center, Noah’s Ark Preparatory Center, Small Steps Day Care, Wee Little Lambs Early Learning Center, YMCA Family Child Care and YWCA Little Wonders Preschool. Real Men Read is a volunteer reader program that brings together men from the Carlisle and Cumberland County area to read to preschool children each month. Men read to children and demonstrate that they are strong readers and enjoy reading. They encourage good reading habits for success in school. At the end of each read-aloud, each child receives a new copy of the book to take home.

The REAL Men Read program seeks to:

  • encourage and foster early literacy skills in preschool children;
  • show that men value education;
  • instill a love of reading in children;
  • connect children with strong male role models;
  • develop book ownership in order to increase a child’s love of reading; and,
  • expand home libraries to encourage reading at home.

Funding for this program is generously provided by Success By 6 and ensures that each child, age three to age five, at each of these centers receives new books to take home throughout the year. Approximately 400 children will participate in this reading program.

Week of the Young Child

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration focusing attention on the needs of young children and their families, and recognizing early childhood education programs and the services that meet these needs. This year’s celebration will take place from April 5 – 11, 2025. Success By 6 partners with Kiwanis Club of Carlisle and other community volunteers to read to preschool children in early childhood education centers in Carlisle and the Cumberland County area. All children receive a copy of the book to take home.

Thank you to the Kiwanis Club of Carlisle who generously provides the funding for these books each year.
