How we allocated the dollars raised through our Carlisle Area Emergency Response Fund

In response to COVID-19, we established a fund to help meet the needs of local non-profits. We allocated these dollars on a rolling basis on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. As of May 7, 2021, we have expended all of the funds we raised and will no longer be accepting applications. In total we raised and distributed $129,830.08. Please read below to learn how funds were allocated to address the rapidly evolving needs of our community:

March 27, 2020 Allocation:

Maranatha-Carlisle -$202.87

  • To be used by to set up remote work capability for their staff to reduce physical interaction between staff and clients to keep everyone safer and prevent spread.

April 3, 2020 Allocation: 

The Salvation Army Carlisle – $300

  • For Gas Cards, Pull-ups, and diapers

Central Penn Food Bank – $1,600

  • To provide 100 Rapid Response Food Boxes to pantries within our service area

Community CARES – $1,100

  • For 6 weeks of a hand washing station, masks, and gloves

CONTACT Helpline – $1,280

  • To cover the expense of additional hours being worked by staff to respond to influx of calls to 2-1-1

April 17, 2020 Allocation:

3P Ride – $ 4,300.00

  • 3P Ride will provide transportation to testing sites and to isolation locations for individuals who are showing symptoms of the COVID-19 virus in Cumberland County. 3P Ride will follow sanitation and disinfectant procedures to prevent the spread of the virus from one passenger to the next.
  • 200 hours of hazard pay for the vehicle operator
  • 52 trips to the testing site and/or to isolation locations
  • 52 units of disinfectant used to thoroughly disinfect the vehicles between passengers.

Hospice of Central PA – $4,480.00

  • 2 nurses, who are a part of a dedicated COVID-19 care team for hospice patients in the Carlisle area, receiving hazard pay 40hrs/week for 8 weeks 

Safe Harbour – $ 1,080.00

  • Masks for 60 residents and an extra load of free wash & dry for 60 residents for 6 weeks.
  • Many residents are still working and need to clean their clothes more often for sanitation purposes.

RASE Project – $5,620 

  • 1 month of RASE House Operating and Staffing Costs 
  • 4 clients without insurance receiving intake and 3 follow up appointments with Recovery Specialist  
  • 2 clients without insurance receiving intake and follow up meetings with provider for Medical Assistance Prescription and 30 day supply of medication 

Central Penn Food Bank – $1,600 

  • For an additional 100 rapid response boxes: a $16 rapid response box equates to 3-4 days of food for a family and is provided free to local partner food pantries.

Community CARES – $3,900 

  • To cover hotel fees of individuals that may be exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms and need quarantined away from the shelter population to prevent the spread of the virus. Cost: 1 week @ $325/wk for 12 people = $3,900

April 24, 2020 Allocation:

New Kingstown Fire Company – $1,500

  • For professional sanitization and decontamination of their apparatus and fire house.

May 1, 2020 Allocation:

Cumberland Goodwill EMS – $1,680

  • This money will go to purchase 48 gallons of disinfectant solution. This solution is used to disinfect ambulances after COVID-19 calls, high risk calls, and our station.

Charles Bruce Foundation – $590

  • The cost of a hotel room for two weeks for an individual that is unable to reside in a shelter setting.

May 8, 2020 Allocation:

Todd Baird Lindsay Foundation – $9,500

  • Funds to provide assistance with shelter expense (rent and mortgage payments)
  • Funds to provide assistance with utility expense (specifically electric and water/sewer)

May 15, 2020 Allocation:

Big Spring Area Food Bank –  $ 500

  • Funding to purchase gloves, masks, signs and cleaning supplies for food distribution.

Maranatha-Carlisle –  $ 2,100

  • 6 laptop computers for employees to use remotely to prevent the spread of the coronavirus

May 22, 2020 Allocation:

Summer Program for Youth (SPY) –  $ 4,500

  •  To fund a teacher for the summer

May 29, 2020 Allocation:

Community CARES  – $2,600.87

  • PPE supplies:

Carlisle Arts Learning Center – $774

  • For items that will allow CALC to hold summer camps while practicing social distancing:
    • 2    10’x10’ ez-up Tents 
    • 2    sets of tent weights    
    • 9    4’ plastic tables 

Employment Skills Center – $2,225

  • For PPE supplies:
    • 1 – Automatic touchless universal sanitizer station and stand  
    • 6 – Hand sanitizer dispensers 
    • 1 – Countertop barrier 
    • 10 – Hand sanitizer refills 
    • 100 – Masks 
    • 1 – Thermometer 
    • 6 – Floor decals for safe distancing 
    • Printing of posters and signs for public safety 
    • 3 – Automatic soap dispensers 
    • 2- Hands-free foot pulls for restroom doors

New Life Community – $5,293.26

  • For a mass purchase of PPE items that will be shared with 6 different camps. Camps include SPY, CALC, Child Time, Carlisle Family YMCA, Dickinson Child Care, and Historical Society.
  • PPE Items Include: masks, gloves, disinfectant wipes and spray, alcohol wipes, sanitation wipes, paper towels, hand sanitizer, bins for sterilizing, thermometers, fogger/mister, sanitizer dispensers, shoe covers, outdoor hand washing stations/porta loos, cleaning gloves, sponges, bleach.

Total distribution for the week of 5/29/2020: $10,893.13

June 5, 2020 Allocation:

Community CARES – $2,400

  • Funds will be used to help purchase two laptops, mobile hotspots, cell phones, portable security cameras, additional phone lines, hot spot lines. These items will make it possible for CARES staff to work at multiple overnight locations and ensure safety of staff, volunteers and clients.

Employment Skills Center – $1,200

  • Funds will be used to help purchase two laptops that will allow instructors to continue conducting trainings and classes in a remote fashion.

Carlisle Family YMCA – $1,925.00

  • Funds will be used to cover the cost of renting a van to transport children to off-site day camp. This is a new expense that will allow campers to be appropriately spaced while being transported.

UPMC Pinnacle Foundation – $5,100

  • Funds will be used to cover the cost of a part-time paramedic that will be able to respond to COVID-19 testing needs at local nursing homes and shelters. The paramedic can also travel to home bound patients that need tested.

Sadler Health Center – $1,090

  • Funds will be used to purchase plexiglass shields that will protect staff and clients as appointments begin to be held in-person again.

June 26, 2020 Allocation:

New Life Community Church – $3,500.00

  • For a second and final bulk purchase of PPE items that will be shared with 6 different camps. Camps include SPY, CALC, Child Time, Carlisle Family YMCA, Dickinson Child Care, and Historical Society.
  • PPE Items Include: masks, gloves, disinfectant wipes and spray, alcohol wipes, sanitation wipes, paper towels, hand sanitizer, bins for sterilizing, thermometers, fogger/mister, sanitizer dispensers, shoe covers, outdoor hand washing stations/porta loos, cleaning gloves, sponges, bleach.

Total distribution for the week of 6/26/2020: $3,500.00

July 10, 2020 Allocation:

Success by 6 – $4,500.00

  • Success By 6, an early childhood initiative of United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County, will allocate $500.00 to nine early childhood education centers, designated as non-profit, to help cover some of the costs associated with the purchase of PPE needed for the 2020-2021 school year. 
  •  Child care centers that will receive support are 1) Bright Beginnings Child Care of Carlisle, 2) Bethel Preschool and Day Care, 3) Carlisle Early Education Center, 4) Carlisle Family YMCA Child Care Center, 5) Dickinson College Children’s Center, 6) Little Lights Learning Center, 7) Noah’s Ark Preparatory Center, 8) Wee Little Lambs, and 9) YWCA Preschool.

July 24, 2020 Allocation:

Little Lights Learning Center -$ 1,500.00

  • Temperature Measurement Kit to take temperature of children and parents entering child care center and screen for individuals who are not wearing masks

Summer Program for Youth –$ 5,000.00

  • School Year Program Funding to allow Summer Program for Youth to provide care and learning opportunities for children who are expected to learn virtually at home but do not have a parent or guardian that is able to stay at home because of work

Total distribution for the week of 7/24/2020: $6,500

August 7, 2020 Allocation:

The Salvation Army – Carlisle – $500

  • Bottles of water to provide individuals that come for a take out meal (typically community meal)

Community CARES – $7,416

  • 3 months of rent for overnight shelter for 50 men and women – $6,000
  • 12 months of weekly rental expense for daytime tent outside of Resource Center – $1,416

Total distribution for the week of 8/7/2020: $7,916

August 14, 2020 Allocation:

3P Ride – $4,300.00

  • Two contactless thermal scans for their Carlisle office.

September 18, 2020 Allocation:

Safe Harbour – $1,000

  • Two Ipads and Cases for Mobile Case Management

Joyful Steps Preschool – $500

  • Personal Protective Equipment purchases

September 25, 2020 Allocation:

Joyful Steps – $1,200

  • Cover expenses related to additional staffing to ensure safety and prevent the spread of the coronavirus

The Salvation Army – $206

  • Rolling bulletin board to display social service updates, job opportunities, etc to clients coming to My Brother’s Table Community Meal since individuals are picking up their meal outside rather than going inside to eat where there are fixed bulletin boards.

October 23, 2020 Allocation:

Second Presbyterian Church – $1,166

  • 20 Amazon Fire 8 tablets to be distributed to elderly, under-resourced, digitally unconnected congregants

November 13, 2020 Allocation:

Carlisle Area Family Life Center – $1,875

  • 114 cans of baby formula lasting approximately six to eight weeks

March 5, 2021 Allocation:

Carlisle Family YMCA – $3,850

  • To help defray increased cost of transportation for summer camp

  • Cleaning supplies and materials for the new family shelter

April 19, 2021 Allocation:

The Salvation Army – Carlisle- $2,640

  • To purchase food for My Brother’s Table community meals

May 7, 2021 Allocation:

Community CARES- $2,500

  • To offset cost of hotels for families and to purchase new cots

Safe Harbour- $3,000

  • To purchase 6 touchless faucets, sinks and hook ups along with the cost of professional installation for their Emergency Shelter bathroom

New Life Community Church- $2,087.62

  • To provide counseling sessions to families in conjunction with In Him Christian Wellness
