Local Community Steps Out and Steps Up at Days of Caring

Over 300 volunteers gave their time and talents Friday and Saturday at our annual Days of Caring event.  Local non-profits made requests for jobs that they needed done but just struggle with the manpower to do.  The United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County organizes this event that took place over 2 days and included the help of businesses, individuals and families.  Work and tasks included, yard work, painting, electrical work and apple picking (gleaning).  When I spoke with volunteers the feedback was inspiring,  “It was a great team building opportunity and so heartwarming to learn about the work done by the non-profit.  There was immediate gratification in the help we gave; it was so rewarding,” beamed Becca Rally, Carlisle Area Health & Wellness Foundation (CAHWF) Director, who worked at Big Brothers, Big Sisters in Harrisburg.

The highlight of Saturdays effort was the “Deliver a Smile Project”,  where families and individuals delivered 1,100 cards made by local area children.  The cards were delivered to nursing homes and care facilities to brighten the day of people who could just use a “Smile”.  Thanks to the Carlisle area school children and counselors who made this effort all possible.

United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County is committed to making a difference in this community and we are so grateful for the outpouring of support that made this years event an incredible success.
