A Letter from Our New Community Impact Director, Jason Maddux
Good morning!
I am very excited to take a few moments to introduce myself as the new community impact director for the United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County.
I look forward to continuing the wonderful work that Jessie Poe accomplished.
My background is not in nonprofits but in newspapers. I have more than 25 years in the field, including just about every aspect you can think of in newsgathering: reporting, editing, photography, design, social media and video.
For the last 15 years or so, I have primarily served as editor of newspapers and their websites in Ohio, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, including The Sentinel and cumberlink.com. That is the position that brought me to the area in 2014. My family and I love it here.
Helping people was the key part of my journalism jobs. Most readers saw the newspaper as a resource not only for information but as a conduit to help them solve problems they faced in their daily lives. I especially enjoyed being an advocate for those who were not being heard. I can’t wait to bring my experiences to this new role.
After leaving The Sentinel, I moved on to PennLive/The Patriot-News, and then to the editor position at the Press & Journal in Middletown. However, I am very excited to be back working in Carlisle and Cumberland County. This area has so much to offer.
Outside of the United Way, I am fortunate to serve on the board of Leadership Cumberland, and I am the curriculum committee chairperson for the organization that develops, promotes, and inspires community-based leadership skills and encourages a deeper understanding and appreciation of Cumberland County. I am also on the Cumberland County Local Emergency Planning Committee. My family sponsors an international fellow each year through the U.S. Army War College International Fellows Program. I help coach my daughter’s softball team in the South Middleton Youth Softball Association. I am also an avid golfer and lover of American history.
My jobs and volunteerism have allowed me to meet many people in the community. I have seen the strengths of organizations that work together. I want to continue working to unite people and resources to build a stronger, healthier Carlisle and Cumberland County. I look forward to learning even more about our community, and to meeting and engaging those of you who I have not already met.
